Using Hermes
Chat
Start chats, find older ones, attach files and switch models in the web chat.
The web chat is where you talk to Hermes in the dashboard. Everyone gets it. On a paid plan you're talking to your own agent, and your conversations stay in a list you can come back to.
Sending a message
Open the chat. The dashboard always opens here, and "Chat" in the sidebar brings you back.
Type in the "Message Hermes…" box and press Enter, or press the send button (↑). Shift+Enter starts a new line instead of sending. A single message can be up to 32,000 characters long.
While Hermes is writing a reply, you can keep typing, but the next message can't be sent until that reply has finished.
Starting a new chat
Where the button is depends on your plan and your screen:
| On a computer | On a phone or a narrow window | |
|---|---|---|
| Paid plan | "New Chat" at the top of the sidebar | The menu button at the top left ("Open menu") opens the "Chats" drawer, which has "+ New Chat" |
| Free tier | Click "Chat" in the sidebar | "+ New Chat" in the top bar |
Suggestion cards
A fresh chat shows up to 4 suggestion cards under the message box. You see them on the free tier, and on a paid plan once your agent is up. On a paid plan with some history, a few of the cards come from your recent chats (for example "Catch up on" followed by a topic you've talked about); the rest are picked at random from a fixed set.
Clicking a card opens a new chat and sends that card's message straight away.
The Getting started card
For your first 14 days, the welcome screen shows a "Getting started" card under the message box, with how many of its steps are done ("1 of 3", for example). It shows up once you've answered the first questions after sign-up, picked a plan or chosen to continue free, from the next time the chat page loads. On a paid plan it waits until your agent is up and ready to chat.
On a paid plan:
- "Schedule a task" opens a new chat with a request for a short morning briefing at 7 already typed in, with your browser's time zone in brackets. It isn't sent: change it if you like, then press Enter. Your agent schedules in its own time zone, UTC until you set yours, so set it first in SettingsBackground tasks (Setting your time zone); until then the time may be saved as UTC. The row is ticked once your agent has a scheduled task that isn't paused, or if you set up a free daily task before you picked a plan (in the first questions or in For You); that free task isn't a task on your agent. A new task can take a page reload to show its tick. The row says the task shows up in For You; in builder mode, look on the Scheduled page instead.
- "Connect Telegram" opens SettingsChannels. It's ticked once your bot is connected and MyHermes knows your Telegram chat: sending
/startdoes this, and so can the automatic setup MyHermes runs after you save the bot. "Not now" hides this row. - "Pick a look" opens SettingsTheme. It's ticked once you pick a theme there (a different card from the one already selected).
On the free tier:
- "Set up a daily task" opens For You, where you set up your free daily task (Plans and credits explains it). It's ticked once you've set one up.
- "Pick a look" works as above.
A ticked row is just a note and can't be clicked. A theme you pick in Settings ticks its row as soon as you close Settings. The Telegram row ticks then too if MyHermes already knows your chat, or on a later visit once it does.
The card goes away when every row is ticked, or when you press its ✕. That choice, and "Not now", are remembered in this browser only, so another browser or device shows the card again.
On a paid account that's 14 days old or more, the welcome screen can show a "Connect Telegram" nudge instead while your Telegram isn't connected. It opens the same place, and its "Not now" hides it. Pressing "Not now" on either the nudge or the card hides both.
Your daily result on the free tier
If you have a free daily task, its newest result appears under the message box when it's less than a day old and you haven't seen it yet. It's headed with the time and the task's name (for example "Your 7:00 AM Morning briefing"). "Show more" opens the full text, "See all in For You" opens the list, and ✕ hides it. Once you pick a plan, it no longer appears here.
Recents and older chats
On a computer, "Recents" sits in the sidebar, below its links. On a phone or a narrow window, open the "Chats" drawer with the menu button at the top left.
- Grouping. Chats are grouped under "today", "yesterday" and "earlier".
- Where each chat came from. A globe marks a web chat, the Telegram logo marks a Telegram chat, and a clock marks a scheduled run.
- Scheduled and app runs stay hidden until you click "Show scheduled runs" at the end of the list ("Hide scheduled runs" puts them away again). That link only appears when there's at least one such run.
- New chats join the list after their first reply.
- Chats without a title are listed as "(untitled)". With no chats yet, the list says "No sessions yet."
- How far back it goes. The list holds your 200 most recent chats, scheduled runs included. Older ones drop off the list.
Click a chat to open it. You see "Loading conversation…" for a moment, then the whole conversation. Finished replies are saved, so they show even if your agent has gone to sleep since.
When your agent is asleep
When your agent has nothing to do, its machine can stop. That's normal, and you don't need to wake it yourself.
- Just send your message. The chat box stays usable. Your message is sent straight away, and the reply arrives once the agent is up.
- The wait has a limit. The chat waits up to 3 minutes. If the agent still isn't up by then, you see "Hermes is taking longer than usual to respond (180s). Try sending again in a moment." followed by a short detail, or "Network hiccup. Try again." Either way, send your message again.
- While a new agent is being set up, or while your agent restarts after a settings change, the message box is disabled and says the agent is starting up or restarting. Try again in a few seconds.
While Hermes answers
When Hermes uses tools to answer you, a row with a 🔧 and the number of tool calls appears above the reply. Click it to see each call.
When Hermes refers to one of your earlier chats, the reply shows a "previous chat" link. It opens that conversation in the same tab. Other links in a reply open in a new tab.
On the free tier, if a reply fails, a small retry icon appears under it; hovering it shows "Retry". Press it to send the same message again.
Attachments
Press the 📎 button next to the message box (its label is "Attach file") to add files. You can attach up to 5 per message; the button turns off once you have 5.
| Kind | Types | Size |
|---|---|---|
| Images | JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP | Scaled so the longer side is at most 1024 pixels, then sent as a JPEG |
| Text and code | .txt .md .csv .json .ts .tsx .js .jsx .py .sh .yaml .yml .toml | Only the first 200 KB of the file is read |
| Documents | PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX | Up to 4.5 MB each |
- Wait for the upload. Each file you attach shows as a chip by the message box. You can't send until every attachment has finished uploading, and a file that failed to upload blocks sending too. Hover a failed chip to see why, then press its × to remove it and attach the file again.
- Too big a document. A document over 4.5 MB is refused with a message giving its size. Split it into smaller files and attach those.
- An old attachment. A file you attached but didn't send within about a day expires. The chat then says "This attachment is no longer available. Please re-attach the file and try again."
- Before you sign in, the chat on the home page can't take files and asks you to sign in to send them.
Switching the model
Next to the message box there's a button showing the model your agent uses. Click it to open a list with a "Search models" box, and pick a model.
- It lists models from your current provider. If you signed in with ChatGPT, it lists the models your ChatGPT account offers; with Grok, a fixed set of Grok models. For those two, this button is the only place to change the model. To use a different provider, change it under SettingsModel (open it). Models and keys covers that.
- Loading. The list shows "Loading models..." while it loads. If it can't load, you see "Couldn't load models" with "Retry" and a link to Settings, where you can type a model id instead. If you signed in with ChatGPT or Grok, Settings has no model box, so press "Retry".
- After you pick, either the new model applies straight away (a note says "Switched to" and the model's name), or your agent restarts to apply it (the note says it's switching to that model and restarting your agent). If a note says your choice was saved but your agent couldn't restart, the new model hasn't reached your agent yet. Open SettingsModel and press "Save credentials" to send it again; if you signed in with ChatGPT or Grok, press "reconnect" there instead.
- When it's greyed out, hover it to see why: "Wait for the current turn to finish", "Wait for your agent to start" or "Wait for your agent to restart".
Commands
/restart(or/reload-mcp) restarts your agent. It has to be the whole message. Hermes replies "Restarting your agent… it'll be back in about 30 seconds."/updatedoesn't update anything itself. Hermes replies with a pointer to your dashboard settings.
Good first things to ask
- Let Hermes introduce itself. The "surprise me" card asks: "List 5 practical things you can help me with that most people don't know about. Pick tasks I'd actually use daily."
- Tell it how you like replies. The "tune your tone" card asks: "From now on, keep your replies under 3 sentences. Skip greetings and sign-offs."
- Tell it about yourself. What you do, what you're working on right now, and how you'd like help day to day. (These are the questions Hermes asks when you first send
/startto your bot on Telegram.) - Ask for something on a schedule (paid plans), for example "send me a morning brief at 7". See Scheduled tasks.
- Attach a file and ask about it.
Limits
- 10 messages a minute per agent in the web chat. Past that you see "Too many messages this minute. Wait 60 seconds and retry."
- 32,000 characters and 5 attachments per message.
- Long answers on a paid plan. A reply can take many minutes when Hermes works through a lot of steps. It keeps going in the background, and the reply appears when Hermes is done. If it still hasn't finished 15 minutes after you sent it, the chat marks it as timed out within the next 5 minutes. A message with an image attached has up to about 4 minutes once your agent is awake, less if it had to wake first.
- The running-time cap on paid plans. When your agent reaches its plan's running-time cap, the chat says Hermes has been hard at work and is catching its breath, and tells you when it'll be back at full speed. Your message isn't saved, so send it again after that time. Plans and credits explains the cap.
- The free tier has its own limits: 10 messages every 3 hours before you sign in, and 200 messages a day on the free model once you have an account. Plans and credits has the details.
If something goes wrong
- It's slow to answer. A sleeping agent has to wake first. Give it up to 3 minutes. If you then see the "taking longer than usual" message or "Network hiccup. Try again.", send your message again.
- It says Hermes didn't respond in time. Your model provider may be slow, not responding, or out of credits. This mostly happens on a message with an image attached, which has up to about 4 minutes. Try again in a moment, and check your balance under SettingsCredits (open it), or your provider's balance if you use your own key.
- It says your API key was rejected, or your provider is out of credits or rate-limited. These come from the model provider. Open SettingsModel and paste a fresh key and save (if you signed in with ChatGPT or Grok, press "reconnect" there instead), top up with that provider, or wait a minute and try again.
- It says Hermes didn't return a reply. Usually the model provider had an error (a rate limit, no credits, or a bad key). Check SettingsModel, then send again.
- It says Hermes is busy with another request. Wait a moment and send your message again.
- It says Hermes was interrupted while working. Something stopped your agent's work on the reply, such as a restart. Send the message again.
- It says it lost contact with Hermes, or that the reply timed out. Send the message again. For a very long request, try splitting it into smaller ones.
- It says your subscription has ended. Your plan is over, so your agent can't chat any more. See Billing.
- An attachment won't send. Wait for the upload to finish, or remove a file that failed (the × on its chip) and attach it again.
Common questions
Can I rename or delete a chat?
Not from the dashboard: there's no rename or delete button. The list shows your 200 most recent chats.
Where did an old chat go?
The list only holds your 200 most recent chats, scheduled runs included. An older chat has dropped off the list.
Why can't I find my free chat from yesterday?
Free chats don't carry over. Once you close the tab, you can't reopen the conversation. A paid plan keeps every chat under "Recents".
